What Is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier — also called the moisture barrier or stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of your skin. It's roughly as thick as a sheet of paper, and it does two jobs at once: it keeps water in, and it keeps irritants, allergens, pollution, and microbes out.

Cholesterol and fatty acids — the other two-thirds of the lipid matrix. A ceramide product without them is doing a third of the job.
